In 2020, the pandemic affected my spiritual and mental stability. Introspection highlights those moments of struggle and pain, and eventual acceptance and healing that hopes to inspire other people who are fighting their own personal battles.

The pandemic and the lockdown surfaced a lot of unresolved issues for many people—problems and traumas in the past that creep in during moments of solitude and isolation. The news and online posts of people who ended their own lives were so tragic. These uncertainties sprung by the pandemic and the series of lockdowns to somebody living alone, forced me to face my own demons.

This series of works has allowed me to read past journal entries, and I reflected on them. I used my past small drawings, doodles, and studies as inspiration. I also made notes on what I would like to present to my works. Showing my vulnerable side is something that I never did in my previous works but this time, I allowed it to flourish in order for me to heal and live with acceptance.

Perhaps, this particular series of revelation and opening myself up will not be pursued again in the near future. I would rather focus more on issues like gender and the working class than focus on myself. But I am thankful that this process allowed me to face my emotionally driven self that sometimes overpowers my practice in painting. My emotions become a burden and I don't find it helpful during my own production process.

But now I have learned to control my emotions when working on an art piece, especially with graphite. The whole process of creating this series allowed me to heal and accept myself more. That includes my past and my present.

My favorite materials right now are graphite and pen and ink because the process of using them is very therapeutic for me, and they allow me to continuously grow in my art practice.

Young artists today are very bold and fearless in their art. They are well received by art enthusiasts and art institutions in our country, especially in the national region. I hope to have more art receptions in the Visayas and Mindanao. This will also give more opportunities to collaborate with female artists from different parts of the country and do some community-based art projects.

This project allowed me to contemplate and revisit my own practice, and dedicate who I become to those who inspired me to channel my emotions through my creative works. The likes of Jose “Kimsoy” Yap who is my mentor in drawing in graphite and pen and ink. He motivated me to explore and think beyond the comforts of my own mental and physical space.
